Do You Need a Separate DJ for Your Wedding Ceremony in Gippsland?
It's one of the most common questions I get from couples planning a wedding in Gippsland: do we need a separate DJ for the ceremony?
The short answer is no. You don't need a second DJ. But you do need the right sound for each part of the day, and the ceremony and the reception ask for very different things.
Ceremony Sound and Reception Sound Are Different Jobs
Your ceremony is short, quiet and personal. The sound has to do three things well:
- Play your processional, signing and recessional music at exactly the right moment
- Let every guest hear your celebrant clearly, including the back rows
- Carry your vows, so nobody misses the moment they came for
Your reception is the opposite. It runs for hours, it's loud, and it moves from dinner music to speeches to a packed dance floor. It needs more power, more coverage and lighting.
The gear that suits one is rarely right for the other.
Why I Run Two Separate Systems
Many ceremonies in Gippsland happen somewhere a full reception rig doesn't belong: a garden, a paddock, a winery lawn or a spot by the water. Often there's no power nearby.
So I bring a dedicated ceremony system. It's a single portable speaker, built to set up quickly wherever your ceremony is. When there's no power nearby, it runs on a backup battery. It pairs with RØDE wireless clip-on microphones for the groom and the celebrant, so every word of your vows comes through clearly. There are no handheld mics to juggle and no cables across the aisle.
My full reception setup is ready and waiting for the party.
This isn't a compromise. It means your ceremony gets gear designed for it, instead of dance-floor speakers dragged onto a lawn.
One DJ, the Whole Day
Here's the part couples care about most. Whoever you meet is who turns up.
I'm a sole operator. No subcontractors. I perform at every booking myself, from your first song down the aisle to the last song of the night.
That means one person who knows your running order, your song choices and the names that need to be said correctly. Nothing gets lost in a handover.
What If the Ceremony and Reception Are in Different Places?
This is where planning matters. If your ceremony and reception are at different venues, I need time to pack down after the ceremony and set up before guests arrive at the reception.
The usual fix is simple. The reception system goes in before the ceremony, so after the vows I only have the portable ceremony speaker to move. We'll work through the timing together well before the day.
Questions to Ask Any Wedding DJ About Your Ceremony
- Do you bring a separate system for the ceremony, or use your reception gear?
- How will my celebrant be heard, and how will our vows be heard?
- What happens if there's no power at the ceremony spot?
- Will you personally be there for both the ceremony and the reception?
- How do you handle the move if the two are in different locations?
