Ask for specific numbers and whether they specialise in weddings or do them occasionally alongside club gigs and corporate events.
Why this matters: Weddings have unique requirements — formal announcements, emotional first dances, coordinating with photographers, managing family dynamics. Someone who primarily DJs nightclubs may struggle with the subtlety required for a wedding reception.
Can I see videos or photos from recent weddings?
Any professional should have documentation of their work. Ask to see their setup at venues similar to yours. Look at how they present themselves, how their equipment looks, and whether the dancefloor appears packed or empty in photos.

Do you have backup equipment?

How do you handle song requests from guests?
The best DJs balance guest requests with reading the dancefloor. They should respect your do-not-play list absolutely whilst using experience to judge whether a request will maintain energy or clear the floor. Ask how they handle pushy guests who demand inappropriate songs.
What to Listen For
A good answer: "I welcome requests and try to work them in when they fit the vibe, but I'll never play something on your do-not-play list, and I won't kill the dancefloor to satisfy one guest." A bad answer: "I play whatever people ask for."
Logistics & Timeline
Will you visit the venue beforehand?
Experienced DJs familiar with local venues may not need a separate visit, but they should at minimum ask detailed questions about power access, setup location, venue restrictions, and acoustic considerations. For complex venues, a site visit is worthwhile.
What time will you arrive to set up?
Professional DJs arrive 1-2 hours before the event starts to set up, test equipment, and troubleshoot any issues. If a DJ plans to arrive 30 minutes before guests, that's not enough buffer for problems. Ask what happens if they encounter setup issues.
Do you provide MC services?

Can you provide ceremony and cocktail hour music?

What's included in your package?
Get a detailed breakdown. Does the price include lighting? Wireless microphones for speeches? Setup and pack-down time? Travel to your venue? Some DJs quote low then add extras; others include everything upfront. Compare total delivered value, not just base prices.
What are your payment terms?
Most professional DJs require a deposit (typically 25-50%) to secure your date, with the balance due 2-4 weeks before the wedding. Be wary of anyone demanding 100% upfront with no refund terms. Equally, no deposit at all suggests they're not taking bookings seriously.
What's your cancellation policy?
Life happens — COVID taught us that. Understand what happens if you need to postpone or cancel. Fair policies typically allow date changes with reasonable notice and offer partial refunds for cancellations outside a certain window (e.g., 90+ days).
What if we want to extend the night?
Your reception is going brilliantly and guests want another hour. What's the overtime rate? Is extension even possible (they might have another booking)? Sort this out beforehand to avoid awkward negotiations whilst your party's in full swing.
